Students will get hands-on experience with making their own recycled paper, using colourful paper scraps from The Rizzeria’s pile of misprints. Each student will stand at a paper-making station, and will get to try making paper in different sizes. You will be taken through the process of ripping, pulping, hogging, casting, posting, air hanging and appreciating the old school ways of paper making. You will also see examples of what you can make with recycled paper and hopefully you will feel inspired.
You will getMaking your own paper is a fun, meditative and analogue activity for all ages, with a lot of benefits:
You practice zero waste and recycling
You get unique, hand made stationery to bring home for art and crafts
You naturally calm down and develop patience
You get a break from screens (your hands will literally be too wet to check the phone)
You can get creative by experimenting with colours, shapes and composition
REFUND POLICY
No refunds less than 7 days before the event date.
If you can’t make it, you are welcome to send someone else instead!
Classes can be swapped to an upcoming date with notice.
Options for bringing paper home
When joining the workshop, there are two different options, for bringing paper home:
THE COMMUNITY METHOD Choose a couple of sheets from our stash of already dry and ready to use, recycled paper, made by previous workshoppers. You will not get the exact sheets that YOU made, but you will get something similar. If you choose this method, the paper you make will be donated for the Rizzeria to pass on to the next workshoppers as a paper-sharing-cycle.
*THE BYO METHODYou are also welcome to take home the exact paper you made, but it requires commitment to following these instructions:
Bring your own cotton rags of different sizes (between A6 - A4 in size), or an old bedsheet.
Bring a vessel (eg. a plastic box or bag) that can be transported flat and safely. It should be big enough to carry a wet stack of rags and paper sheets (something like a sturdy plastic shopping bag with handles or an A-4 sized plastic box should be good - just use what you have).
As soon as possible after the workshop: have a drying rack and pegs ready to hang the paper to dry (you will learn how to do this at the workshop). It usually takes 24 hours to dry.
NB: Remind the teacher to show you the best technique to remove dry paper from rags, as it can tear if you’re not careful.
After that, you will need to press the paper flat (you can leave it between some heavy books for a day or two).

Preparation
What to bring
- Everything will be provided, so there is no need to bring anything (except if you have something you wish to experiment with or if you choose the BYO METHOD*)
What to wear
Wear comfortable shoes. Our hands might get stained, but the riso ink is made from soy and is non toxic. It does take a bit of scrubbing to get off, but we can provide gloves if needed. You might get a bit of paper splashing on your clothes, which dries and comes off easily, but we have aprons available.
